Senior Naa’san Carr was one of six local leaders honored with a Freedom Fund Award from the NAACP’s Trenton Branch during a ceremony on Oct. 4. The awards honor those who have made significant contributions to the community in the areas of education, voting rights, criminal justice reform and human rights.

“It's an honor to be recognized by the Trenton Branch NAACP,” Carr says. “I don't do this work because of the titles, but to continue fighting for the freedoms held dear.”

Carr, a political science major, is passionate about advocating for students who have been traditionally underrepresented, marginalized or underresourced, as demonstrated by his numerous leadership roles during his collegiate career. Carr helped establish Rider’s student chapter of the NAACP last spring, serving as the organization’s inaugural president, and was elected the first Black president for Rider’s Student Government Association. Additionally, he has served in leadership positions for the University’s Black Student Union, Haitian Student Association, Rider African Student Association, Black Men Unified, and Center for Diversity and Inclusion.

Outside of Rider, Carr is the second vice president for the NAACP New Jersey State Conference Youth and College Division and the national deputy director of partnerships for College Democrats of America’s Black Caucus.

Other Freedom Fund Award recipients included Councilman Kevin Baxter for Ewing, New Jersey; Rev. Dr. John Harris of Galilee Baptist Church; Jametta Clarke, social studies teacher at Lawrence High School; Shereyl Snider, community organizer at the East Trenton Collaborative; and Pastor Jose Rodriguez ’13 of The Rodriguez Family Foundation, who also earned his bachelor’s in liberal arts from Rider.
